Greg Horwitch

Greg Horwitch is a painter and draftsman who divides his time between Tuscany and New England. Painting nudes, portraits and multiple-figure compositions, he continues his lifelong interest in the human figure. In recent years he also has become progressively interested in painting and drawing landscapes, particularly those revealed by the first and last lights of day.

Art & Antiques' Collector’s Sourcebook, Spring 2008
Born in Boston in 1973, from an early age Greg expressed in drawing his fascination for both the palpable world around him and the imagined worlds of fictional stories and historical tales. As a boy, he also had the privilege of traveling to various parts of the world, where he sketched the landscape and drew from works in museums. A summer spent in Italy drawing historic buildings and statuary at age fourteen proved particularly compelling and foretold the role which that country would play in his later development.

From 1992 to 1997 he studied painting and printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA 1997), spending his final year in the school's program in Rome. He subsequently enrolled at Charles H. Cecil Studios, a private atelier in Florence, where he pursued studies in observational drawing and oil painting to complement his education at RISD. Over the course of three years at Charles H. Cecil Studios he also variously taught figure and portrait drawing and painting as well as human anatomy for artists.

Now a full-time artist, he works both in his studio in Florence and on site, en plein air, in various regions of Italy and the United States.
